Pequot Lakes, MN – Just a little north of Nisswa

Looking for a spring, summer, or fall adventure that blends history, nature, and one heck of a view? Say hello to Paul M. Thiede Fire Tower Park in Pequot Lakes.

We’ve made the trek a few times, and it never disappoints. The park spans 40 acres and is packed with winding trails, towering pines, and scenery to take in all around. It’s open daily from dawn to dusk, usually from late spring through late fall (weather dependent). It’s closed during the winter months for safety.

A Tower That Touches the Sky

The fire tower stands 100 feet tall and, if you know where to look, you can spot it from Highway 371. You’ll find the park just off County Road 11, about 0.3 miles east of Hwy 371—watch for the sign on your left if you're heading east.

Built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the MN DNR Division of Forestry, the tower once helped spot wildfires and now helps folks spot jaw-dropping views. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the National Historic Lookout Register. The park itself is named after Paul M. Thiede, a former Crow Wing County commissioner who helped preserve this gem.

Getting There & Getting Up

There’s a gravel path with signs that’ll lead you to the tower. It’s a short walk—about 0.3 miles, give or take—with a few steps and a gentle incline.

Even if you don’t climb, it’s worth the stroll just to see the tower up close. But if you’re feeling brave (or just want to burn some leg energy), go for the climb. Just know—100 feet of incline steps is no joke! The stairs are narrow, so be mindful of people going up or down, and follow the posted rules. (Note: No more than six people on the tower at once.)

Worth the Climb

Once you’re at the top, take a moment. You’ll be rewarded with views stretching up to 20 miles in every direction. You can see Hwy 371, downtown Pequot, and a whole lot of trees. In fall? Absolutely stunning. Pack the camera.

Stick Around a Bit

There’s a covered picnic shelter, a few benches to kick back, and interpretive signs that share the story of the park and the people behind it. Bring some snacks. Bring a friend. Or just sit for a bit and enjoy the stillness.

More Than Just the Tower

This isn’t just a quick climb-and-go. With 40 acres of land, the park has trails that wind through peaceful woods and gentle terrain. No bikes or motorized vehicles—just the sounds of the Northwoods. It’s a quiet, unplugged kind of place. Bring the kids. Bring the dog. Or just bring yourself.

Here’s your reminder:

This place is right in our backyard. The Nisswa Lakes Area is packed with hidden gems like this—where a simple walk turns into a memory. Whether you’re chasing a view, sneaking in a quiet morning hike, or just looking for something new to check off your list—this spot delivers.

Stay curious. Stay wandering.

We’ll see you at the top.
