Oans, zwoa, drei, g’suffa! = One, two, three… drink!
On Saturday, September 23, 2023, we had the pleasure of experiencing the Snarktoberfest at the Snarky Loon Brewing Co in Jenkins, MN. This annual event celebrates all things Oktoberfest, with a focus on German-inspired food, beer, music, and games.
Having been regular visitors to the Snarky Loon for their exceptional beers and live music, this marked our first venture into their Oktoberfest celebration. To say we were impressed would be an understatement.
Upon our arrival, we were immediately struck by the sheer number of people in attendance. The parking lot was packed to the brim, setting the stage for a lively evening. We were fortunate enough to grab some of the last Oktoberfest Mugs they had in stock – a cool addition to our growing collection of local memorabilia.
As we made our way to the back tent, we were treated to an array of festivities. Raffles, live music, games, and more were on offer, creating an energetic and Oktoberfest atmosphere. Naturally, there was no shortage of Oktoberfest beers to choose from, and the giant pretzels were a delicious accompaniment.
One particularly intriguing activity was the "beer poking" - a process involving heating a metal poker in a fire until it glowed red, then plunging it into a mug of beer for a few seconds. This technique instantly caramelizes the malt sugars present in certain types of beer, adding a unique twist to the tasting experience.
In addition to beer poking, we also enjoyed watching participants participate in the games that were going on inside the tent, such as the pickle toss, stein hoist, and the das boot competition. We also had a lot of fun checking out the costume contest, which was filled with multiple people dressed to impress with all their Oktoberfest gear. We saw everything from traditional lederhosen and dirndls to more creative costumes!
Shoutout to the staff!
We also want to give a special shoutout to the staff at the Snarky Loon. They were all incredibly friendly and helpful, and they really went out of their way to make sure that everyone had a great time. It was clear that they put a lot of thought and effort into organizing the event, and it showed.
Overall, we highly recommend adding the Snarktoberfest to your list of fall activities in the Nisswa and Brainerd Lakes Area. It's undoubtedly a must-attend event for Oktoberfest enthusiasts.
Prost!
